What is occupational therapy

Occupational therapists help people to do what they want to do in their day to day life. This is achieved through working in a holistic person-centred way to identify goals a person wants to achieve, and current barriers to this.

Occupational therapists then work with the individual, and their unique set of circumstances, to address these barriers. Barriers may be short-term resulting from injury, such as a fracture, and a rehabilitative approach may be appropriate to regain skills or strength lost to achieve identified goals.

Barriers can also be longer-term resulting from a long-term condition, and a compensatory approach may be appropriate or a combination of the two may be required.
